Welcome to the Cat Guru

Every cat lover has a personal cat guru. But not every cat guru is a semi feral mother cat who gives birth to kittens in the author’s kitchen at an ashram in India. This intimate opportunity to witness the inside life of a beautiful cat family—their joys and growth and scrapes—serves as a backdrop for our own individual spiritual and psychological growth.

The unexpected birth of the kittens, Bhakti and Samah, triggers a whirlwind of humor and questioning, love and pathos, as we become initiated into a new understanding of nature’s laws. The story begins as a simple cat tale filled with the surprises of maya. Soon it evolves into a natural human drama, encompassing different facets of life. Both these levels are supported by the spiritual insights that are continually being offered, as the cats become our teachers.

The Cat Guru includes footnotes and glossary, for those interested in learning about Hinduism.

With 16 Color Cat Photos, 166pp.
An Ibis Press Book, $16.95

NAINA LEPES began a long term relationship with cats when a beautiful black-and-white stray, later named Neffy, crawled through a tiny opening in her sixth floor kitchen window in New York and remained for fourteen years. But this experience did not adequately prepare her for the whirlwind of being a foster mother to a semi-wild cat family in India.

Naina is a longtime student of Vedanta and Eastern spirituality, and the author of The Bhagavad Gita and Inner Transformation, as well as a website on the Gita at www.thegitaspace.com. Formerly she worked as a Jungian psychotherapist. Naina resides in India and New York.
